Typing "R FTP" on device 6 will start up an Arpanet user FTP
program. To get a description of the commands type "?" or "help".
The program supports rubout and ↑U for line kill. A user manual
will be forthcoming. Direct inquiries to me. -lee
NOTE: The FTP will function properly only if the ARPA machine
is in operation (device 3). An attempt will be made to leave
it operational most of the time.

EXR or EXHALE from the SAIL-ADM uses a great deal of the bandwidth
toward SAIL and causes unreasonable latencies across the Micom
link. It would be worthwhile to find some way for making
FTP work for .RIM files also to remove the dependency of
Dev6 on the XPATCH line for regular use.

∂22-May-80 0024 HWC Floppy renewal
To: "@NET[DIS,S1]" at SU-AI
After having hard disk read errors on the system floppy on Dev7,
I used another system disk to do a copy of it. I had to
replace the DXMNFB.SYS on that floppy (labeled OTA's special version - 6-28-79).
I made two floppies, SALVAGE1 and SALVAGE2 from the remains of the OTA floppy
(with the DXMNFB.SYS and BOOT glommed from the MT floppy across the way).
Since I had some problems with DX0: on that DSD, I think PM should be scheduled
for it. Please remember to refresh floppies regularly to save problems like
this.

Local Network Update
Device 7, the Development machine has acquired a hard disk. The
total capacity is around 75 Megabytes, organized as 5 units (RK0
through RK4). The following conventions should be adhered to for
use of the units:
Logical unit RK0: should contain all installed binaries (RT-11 .SAV
files meant for use on the Development RT-11, and .BIN files meant
for loading into other machines).
Logical unit RK1: is reserved for development versions of source,
object and binary files for local network software.
Logical unit RK2: is unused and unitialized and should remain so
unless you update this comment.
Logical unit RK3: is scratch. It is meant for temporary storage
and any files on it may be deleted without notice.
Logical unit RK4: is unused and unitialized and should remain so
unless you update this comment.
Logical unit RK5: does not exist hardwarily and should NEVER be
referred to under any circumstances. In the current version of
the software completely random things may happen. You might
be inadvertentely referencing RK0: for example.
∂09-Jun-80 1616 CBF New Instructions for rebooting the switch
To: "@NET[DIS,S1]" at SU-AI
Rebooting the Switch
1) Place the Boot/Run switch in the Boot position. The DatMedia across
from the S-1 should now be talking to device 7.
2) Hit the reset button on the switch. A $ should come out on the TI.
Type AL170010 in response to the $. Wait 5 seconds.
3) Go to the DataMedia and type at device 7:
R XPATCH xpatch should prompt with a *, then type:
SY:SWITCH.BIN/U:177550 xpatch will type stuff about ↑Z↑X etc.
type ↑Z↑V (that is Control-Z Control-V)
4) The switch should come up in less than 30 seconds.
Type ↑Z↑X (Control-Z Control-X) followed by a ↑C (Control-C)
to exit XPATCH on device 7.
Reset the Boot/Run switch back to the run position.

It would seem at one time the project must have possesed two complete
RT-11 V3 manual sets. As of now, neither of them looks complete.
Since I seem to have been handed the responsibility for our most
important V3 based program I have taken the liberty of appropriating
the more complete set. Anyone wishing to relieve me of these manuals
is also welcome to take on the responsibility that rides with them.
In the meantime, I would like to know the whereabouts of a V3 Macro-11
manual.
I would also suggest that perhaps the project order a new set.

in the rolling cabinet in the hardware area are suitable for scratch.
If there is anything out there dear to your heart, you'd better claim it
soon and put it in your office. If there is anything you feel is really
of general use and ought to be out there, then label it and leave it in
my office for the time being.
If anyone has a pristine set of distribution floppies for RT-11 V3B I
certainly wouldn't mind seeing them.

The switch is now running on an 11/23. There have also been software
changes. If anyone now thinks he sees characters being dropped, I am
interested in hearing about it. As always I want to hear if the switch
has to be reloaded for any reason. The first 11/23 I put in appears to
have died after about 8 hours of usage. If you have trouble rebooting
the switch while I'm gone, you should probably pull the 11/23 and
replace it with the S-1 Mark V lying nearby.
Note that character can still be lost if the multiplexed Sail line
gets overloaded. I would expect this to appear as a big chunk being
lost though.
